We have selected a number of fantastic breakfast spots, which are guaranteed to instantly make you feel happy. Bon appétit!
Breakfast in Antwerp - 16 breakfast and brunch hotspots in Antwerp
The country’s first cornflakes bar
All the cornflake fans out there will be completely in their element when they visit Sara and Maarten at Cereal Heaven. You will find more than 100 different types of breakfast cereals from right across the world. You can combine three different breakfast cereals in one bowl, with 2 toppings and the milk of your choice. Our favourite bowl? The lucky one with fruit loops, lucky charms, rice krispies, marshmallows and strawberry milk.
The best coffee bar in town
Charlie’s has been voted Antwerp’s best coffee bar for three consecutive years. And that certainly comes as no surprise, as the coffee served here isn’t the only thing that's great, the breakfast on offer is pretty amazing too. From a lovely breakfast for the little ones right through to Charlie’s luxury breakfast: there is literally something for everyone. Tip: you can have a gluten-free version of your favourite breakfast for a 2.50 euro supplement.
All Day Breakfast
You can enjoy breakfast in the sunshine all day long on the corner of the Kasteelpleinstraat and the Verbondstraat. Opt for a breakfast or a breakfast meal with all the trimmings. Salty or sweet, regular or luxurious: the choice is yours! The French toast served here certainly also comes highly recommended! Enjoy it with a strong coffee, a relaxing cup of tea or a ‘dirty chai’: a chai latte with a shot of espresso. We love it!
The sourdough sandwiches on offer here are truly not to be missed. Enjoy them as a hearty breakfast or a light lunch. Definitely also worth a try: the eggs benedict and the eggs florentine. The difference? The first poached eggs are with bacon, the second with spinach. A delicious veggie option! Room for a little more? Then go and take a peek at all the delicious things on the bar …
Burgers for breakfast
The Leeuwenstraat is one of Antwerp’s nicest streets, very near the equally lovely Vrijdagmarkt. Are you going to explore the town? Then pop in here first for a late breakfast or early brunch. The menu features wurgers: savoury and sweet waffle burgers. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays you can enjoy a luxury B-NUT breakfast with B-NUT waffles, a croissant, an egg, sandwich fillings, salads, a hot drink, some juice and a glass of bubbly.
Bubble Waffle Café
Street food for breakfast
Wijngaardbrug 2, 2000 Antwerp, www.bubblewaffle.be
Another lovely square to try out is the Hendrik Conscienceplein. You’ll find plenty of cosy places to enjoy breakfast and lunch here. The latest new hotspot is the Bubble Wafflé Café: the place to be to satisfy your sweet cravings. The café serves Hong Kong Egg Waffles for breakfast, lunch, or as a snack whilst on the go. Healthy or guilty: something for everyone!
Delicious and ultra fresh
Jos Smolderenstraat 15, 2000 Antwerp, www.barchel-antwerp.com
Barchel at the Stadspark was the first (coffee) bar to introduce an ‘all day breakfast’. Barchel has now also opened a second site in the new Nieuw Zuid Antwerp district. The success formula has remained exactly the same: a concise breakfast menu which includes all the classics. Home-made and ultra fresh, yet a little bit different from the norm.
A little peckish or proper hungry?
Are you planning on going (antique) furniture shopping in the Kloosterstraat during the weekend? Then pop into Kloonies whilst you’re there. In addition to the à la carte breakfast menu (mainly with pistolets and croissants), you can also opt for a breakfast package which is specifically tailored to your level of hunger. There are also nice combo’s with Greek yoghurt and fresh seasonal fruit on offer for anyone who is more in the mood for a healthy option.
Nellie's Coffee Bar
Sandwiches in the sunshine
As well as enjoying the theatre, you can sit down to a lovely breakfast or lunch in Nellie’s coffee bar (on Saturdays and Sundays) near the Vreemdelingenmarkt. The menu changes regularly, but tasty sandwiches and salads are always on offer. Many also say they serve the absolute best latte in town. Definitely worth a try after a hard day’s shopping, wouldn’t you agree?
Oude Vaartplaats 35, 2000 Antwerp, www.nellies.be
Cool breakfasts, cool men
The breakfasts are almost as cool as the men who make your coffee at Butchers Coffee. Our all time favourite is the Butchers Breaky: sourdough toast with avocado mash, courgette ribbons, a poached egg and home-made labneh. Vegetarian and incredibly delicious. You can enjoy breakfast here from the morning right through to the late afternoon. Not hungry? Then why not just pop in for a perfectly made cappuccino.
Breakfast and coffee with a view of the park
This coffee bar / eatery is located just out of the city centre, but is definitely worth a visit. Not just because Café Kamiel is located in the shadows of the Hof van Leysen park, but also because you can enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet here during weekends. However, reservations are a must! There is fresh soup in the afternoon too, plus spaghetti à volonté on Thursday evenings!
Bagels & happy coffee
You can enjoy bagels & a happy coffee in Barnini any day of the week (yes, any day!). Find a nice place to sit in the cosy retro interior, or - weather permitting - out on the terrace. Also a fantastic place to sit and catch up with friends before or after the market, whilst enjoying a delicious slice of home-made cake. Tip: keep an eye on their Facebook page, as Barnini regularly organises fun events.
Breakfast ... or would you prefer a picnic?
You’ll find Caravan in the shadows of the Damplein, a great place to enjoy an authentic and worldly breakfast. We are huge fans of the huevos rancheros: thoroughly Mexican! You’ll also have the option of enjoying a game of basketball on the square after your breakfast. A nice alternative: you can collect a well-stocked picnic basket here too and enjoy a picnic in Park Spoor Noord. Be sure to book your basket around two days in advance.
Coffee, sandwiches & knitwear
Veronique Leysen’s coffee bar is definitely worth a visit. Located near Berchem station, you can enjoy a finger-licking delicious brunch menu here during the weekends. But there are certainly also plenty of breakfast options for everyone during the week. Banana sandwich or chocolate sandwich? Or would you prefer a Detox Bomb? Choosing something from all those delicacies is no easy task. But fortunately everything is truly delicious.
Rolls, sandwiches, subs
You can enjoy rolls, sandwiches and subs throughout the entire day. Sweet or savoury? There is literally something for everyone. Make sure you also check out the suggestion menu with seasonal fresh delicacies. Inexpensive, easily accessible (tram number 7 and bus number 9 stop right outside the front door) and take aways are available too. This has been a hotspot for university and art students who are studying nearby for years.
L'épicerie du Cirque’s Breakfast Bar
You can enjoy a delicious breakfast in Moss at any time of day. The menu features worldly breakfast dishes like American pancakes and shakshuka. You’ll be able to discover a variety of seasonal fresh suggestions on site too. A stylish place to enjoy breakfast in style. Moss is a new coffee bar run by the team behind L’epicerie du Cirque.
Inspired by the seasons
You can’t book a table in Tinsel at the Vlaamsekaai, you simply need to drop in for a coffee, breakfast or lunch. The common denominator? Healthy dishes inspired by the seasons. We are huge fans of American pancakes, with plenty of maple syrup and even more seasonal fruit. Our guests can enjoy the terrace when weather permits.
Vlaamsekaai 40, 2000 Antwerp, www.tinsel.be
